Thanks to Lt. Governor Dewhurst’s leadership and the hard work of job-creating entrepreneurs across the state, Texas emerged as the nation’s leading economy in the first decade and a half of the 21st Century. During his tenure, Lt. Governor Dewhurst pursued economic growth and job creation by fostering a healthy business climate through low taxes, limited government spending and the lightest possible regulatory hand. He relentless worked to knock down any barriers to job growth and economic freedom across the state.
Over the final ten years of his tenure, three out of every 10 new American jobs were created in Texas, providing the kind of opportunity for which Texas has long been known across the country and around the world.
A staunch fiscal conservative, Lt. Governor Dewhurst led the charge to cut state taxes 54 times for nearly $16 Billion dollars, including one cut that was, at the time, the largest tax cut in Texas history. (It was composed of cuts to property taxes and reorganization of business taxes intended to have the maximum possible positive impact.) When people and their employers were able to keep more of their hard earned money, the Texas economy surged and new jobs emerged.
Thanks to factors like tougher mortgage underwriting laws and Lt. Governor Dewhurst's commitment to economic liberty, Texas burst out of the 2008 economic recession in a stronger position than ever before. For example, the Texas real GDP grew by 4.8 percent in 2012, vastly outstripping the U.S. growth of 2.5 percent during that time period.
Texas exports have continually led the nation with almost $280 Million in goods sold abroad in 2014, a 183% increase since 2003. Lt. Governor Dewhurst's commitment to trade, both foreign and domestic, strengthened the state's position as a manufacturer and producer of goods and services in high regard in markets everywhere.
